Farmstand opening a big success

Farm2_13_10_0196The beets were the first to go. Then the garlic greens.

All told, Veggielution’s farm stand sold $190 and 58.75 pounds of fresh produce harvested from the acre in its first day, and that’s just our winter harvest. Wait till we get into our summer crops and massive yields of tomatoes, zucchini and melons.

It was great to see the dozens of friends and community members who came by on February 13 to buy or just say “hi.” Thank you all for coming, telling your family and friends, and helping ensure that the farm stand ran smoothly on its first day.

“Everyone seemed to go home happy,” reflected Amie Frisch, Veggielution co-founder. “Lots of people were chatting the whole time, and we did a few farm tours. Everyone seemed very excited that we were opening—hopefully they come back as regular customers.”

JoAnn Freda, a resident of downtown’s Roosevelt neighborhood, said she first heard about Veggielution at Good Karma Vegan Café in downtown San José (which donates food scraps for Veggielution’s worm bins), and she later came out to a workday. “I bought some fine looking arugula, which I plan to use in a grilled Swiss and arugula panini,” she later wrote on her blog. She also spread the word on her neighborhood Yahoo group. Thanks JoAnn, and we hope the panini was delicious!

The farm stand will be open every Saturday from 2:30 to 5 p.m. at Emma Prusch Farm Park, near the gate from the main parking lot. Produce is sold on three-level sliding scale, depending on how much our customers can afford: those who can pay top dollar to support Veggielution, those who can pay grocery store prices, and those whose circumstances mean they can’t afford to pay for produce.

We expect the harvest for this coming Saturday to include arugula, beets, broccoli, chard, choi sum, cilantro, collards, green garlic, spring onions, kale, lettuce, mustard greens, pak choi, radishes and rosemary. Please come out and spread the word! Prices are on a sliding scale, so you pay what you can afford.
