After School Spring 2010
Our Spring 2010 Program is now in full swing. Check our website for updates! We will spend 8 weeks growing, eating and learning about food. We will be accepting applications for next spring starting in February 2011. Youth in grades 9-12 are welcome to apply.
When is it?
March 18th – May 15th
Thursdays from 3:45p to 6:15p
Saturdays from 10:00a to 1:45p
Why do it?
You get to meet new friends, eat yummy food, make a difference in your community, have something to put on your resume, be outside, learn leadership skills, and possibly earn community service hours. Also, we will have several Youth Internships available to participants that complete the Afterschool Youth Program. This kind of youth farm program is totally new in San Jose. If accepted, you get to be one of the few youth that help make this new project become successful and grow.
How do I apply?
First, have a look at our handbook to find out more about the program structure. To apply, fill out our Online Application. Make sure that you answer every question completely. Then you need to ask a teacher that knows you well to go online and fill out the Teacher Recommendation Form. All forms must be in by February 24th, 2010. We will make final selections and let you know if you got in by March 3rd, 2010. You don´t need previous experience, just a really strong interest in farming and a lot of enthusiasm. We want a diverse group of students that represent all of San Jose.
What’s it like?
We will be doing a variety of farm tasks like planting seeds, weeding, composting, and harvesting. Sometimes you´ll be doing hard work outside, other times you´ll be learning with other youth program members and working out in the community. We will do weekly workshops on agriculture, environmental and social issues. We will learn about nature, community, and teamwork. On Saturdays we will join the community workday to help on the farm and show community members what we have learned. In our youth program you´ll become friends with other youth from different walks of life, and help to build a community here in San Jose that is about environmental sustainability and equity.
How can I get there?
You can ride your bicycle, take the bus, get a ride, or drive. The 22 and 77 buses stop directly in front of the park, and a number of other buses stop within a block or 2. Check VTA for transit directions from where you are.
Where does the food go?
Last year, our farm produced over 3100 pounds of food, and this year we are producing even more. We eat some of it, lots gets donated to a soup kitchen called Martha’s Kitchen, and lots gets sold at our affordable Farmstand at the Park. We will also be selling some to local restaurants.
What should I wear?
Wear shoes and clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Bring layers, it could get cool in the evening.
